macOS Monterey

Apple today released macOS 12 Monterey on Macs compatible with Apple silicon or Intel processors. The new version is a free upgrade for anyone with a compatible machine.

macOS Monterey brings several new features and improvements. The first is SharePlay, which is also being released today on iOS and iPadOS. It allows users to listen to music, watch movies or TV shows, and more together via FaceTime calls. FaceTime calls also receive spatial audio, so the speaker’s voice comes from the direction they are on the screen.

Affinity Publisher

Other FaceTime enhancements include sound isolation to eliminate background noise, broad-spectrum to get a variety of incoming sounds, portrait mode, which will also be available for Webex and Zoom, and a new grid view for group calls.

Universal Control

The new universal control feature allows users to use a single mouse and keyboard between Mac and iPad. Devices just need to be side by side and the operating system automatically understands when you move your mouse to the edge of the screen which device you want to move. AirPlay to Mac allows users with an iPhone or iPad to share content on a Mac just like you would on an Apple TV.

Say Hello To Focus Mode

macOS Monterey also gets some features from iOS 15, such as Live Text and Visual Look Up.

Superpowers for getting things done.

Introducing magical new ways to use your Mac. Bring all the information in your photos to life with Live Text and Visual Look Up. And use Shortcuts to streamline lengthy steps in workflows and everyday tasks. Your Mac now lets you interact with text in any image. Click an address and it opens in Maps. Call, message, or save any phone number you see. You can copy and paste just as you would with any other text. And personal details and information from images never leave your device.

Monterey also gets Focus, which are custom do not disturb profiles that you can create for different occasions, activities, or times of the day to only get personalized notifications.

Safari Redesigned

Safari has also been updated with a brand new UI, improved tab management, and increased privacy protections.

macOS Monterey is now available to download through the Mac App Store.
